With each match struck and subsequently "consumed", the lighting and sound of this piece is drastically affected. Out of frame, the fire illuminates the face of the subject, (inspired by chainmail of a soldier, cloak of a saintly figure), who repeatedly attempts to inhale the heat, to "bring the fire inside." Match to book adds jarring percussion to the white noise of the camera itself; footage slowed in speed allowing for a passing car to arc across the sound landscape like the cry of an animal.
Silence is only present during a flickering of stills in which the flame itself takes the forefront.
Ultimately, the subject is pushed out of focus and into the background by the fire itself, dancing like a phantasm
until it withdraws completely.
